1. Instantly Grab Attention
Regardless of whether you sell your foodstuffs online or offline, it’s important to focus on packaging aesthetics. How your item is packaged will either further entice consumers to purchase it, or if it doesn’t leave a lasting impression, they will keep looking. For online products, make sure that your packaging is visible and clearly stands out on your thumbnails. At the end of the day, you need to make a lasting impact!
2. Consider Competitors
A product packaging design may look good in theory, but the question is, does it look good when placed next to competing products? Take a look at the packaging that competitors in your industry are using. For online selling, make sure that your design is easily visible and clearly communicates what your product is all about. Most importantly, consider aesthetics and how your packaging holds up when competing against numerous other thumbnails.
3. Place Emphasis On Name
An industry standard is that the name of the product should always be the most noticeable and the logo of the company is secondary. Of course, this is a rule that may have some exceptions, especially if your company logo already bears the name of the product. However, it’s important that consumers can know what your product is and what it does at a glance. Additionally, this is also an integral part of ensuring that your products are FDA compliant.
4. Set Yourself Apart
Consumers are quick to grab what interests them, and as such, you have about three seconds to inform and set yourself apart from your competitors. This makes the front of your packaging valuable real estate as it needs to show consumers why your product is the better choice. Use the front of your packaging to share key points with consumers why your product is the best. Only name a few selling points and leave the rest for the back of your package as it can look too cluttered otherwise.
5. Showcase Your Product
Great packaging design allows for consumers to actually know what they’re getting. A small window into the packaging of the box, jar or packet can help consumers decide if the product is worthy of their attention. As consumers are also placing a lot of faith in your company, letting them view the inside of the packaging, you’re reaffirming their belief that they’re choosing the right product for their needs. Having said that, it’s important to show the best aspects of your food item. That means any broken pieces, crumbs or empty air should not become the focus of your design! Seal your packaging with moulded plastic caps and plugs.
A high quality photo of your product is the next best thing if an inner window is not possible. By visually giving consumers a way to see the ingredients and flavors, they will feel more confident about choosing your product.
